Moving In Day is exciting, fun and a little crazy at times. This page contains some information for students and their parents / guardians / friends helping them move. Please drop us an email if you have any questions. We look forward to meeting you on the 1st October!
When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by the Warden and a team of Subwardens and Hall Seniors who will help you move into your room. The students will need to check in with us to get their keys and welcome packs. There will be light refreshments served throughout the day because we all know moving is exhausting! Plus you’ll need to stay energised for our Southside Party later that night (sorry, no parents at that point!).
If you’re not going to be arriving on Moving In Day, please drop the wardening team an email so we can make sure the accommodation office doesn’t reallocate your room (though this won’t be a problem as long as you move in on Sunday)! Also if you plan on arriving particularly late that day, it would help us to know.
Which hall is Selkirk?
Selkirk Hall is the east-most hall of the three Southside Halls, which puts us in the south-east corner of Princes Gardens. We’ll have the hall decorated for moving in day so it’ll be hard to miss!
Arriving by car at Selkirk Hall on Saturday 1st October?
Moving in will start at 08:00 on Saturday morning. We will not be able to accept students or any belongings before that time. A one-way system will operate from 08:00 to 17:00, with cars entering from the north side of Princes Gardens and exiting from the south side of the garden onto Exhibition Road. College staff will be on hand to help direct traffic and maintain safety and you will be enthusiastically greeted by the subwardens and hall seniors. Once your car is unloaded, it must be moved to the main campus, in order to allow other cars to come in and unload. Vouchers for free parking on the main campus will be available on the day (‘a’ on map above), just see a member of the wardening team to get yours. There is no access to the halls through Princes Gate Mews. Please be advised we have a very limited number of parking spaces and we would ask for patience when unloading belongings.
Arriving by car all other times (Sunday 2nd of October and beyond)?
Parking should be available on Princes Gardens after 18:00 weekdays, after 14:00 on Saturday, and all day Sunday. These are ‘pay and display’ parking bays so make sure that you follow the local instructions.
Please do not leave your cars unattended on Moving in Day (apart from in the main Imperial College site) as you may receive a parking ticket from the very inflexible Westminster Council parking wardens!
Don’t forget to notify the wardens if you will not have moved in by Sunday 2nd October so your room doesn’t get reallocated. Generally, we’d appreciate a warning if you’re arriving particularly late in the evening on Saturday or early in the morning on Sunday (it’s a long weekend for everyone!).
Arriving by means other than a car?
If you are arriving by plane or train, take the underground to South Kensington Station (Piccadilly Line from Heathrow, also on Circle and District). From South Kensington Station it is easiest to take the underground tunnel marked “To the museums”. Walk 5-10 minutes until the very end of that tunnel. When you take the stairs up out of the tunnel you will be on Exhibition Road facing a pedestrian crossing. Cross the road and turn left. Proceed up along Exhibition Road. In about 10 m you will cross a small road called Princes Gate Mews. After another 20m you will come to a second small road. This is Princes Gardens and will be marked with Imperial College signs. Turn right and walk along this road. Selkirk Hall is the last entrance on your right. If you are arriving by car, you cannot use this access point on Moving In Day as we will be operating a one way system and this is the point where cars leave. If you are arriving by taxi, then get the driver to drop you off “On Exhibition Road, immediately opposite Imperial College Road”, and follow the above directions.
