Wardening Team

The Wardening team at HWJ consists of the Warden, Assistant Warden and four Subwardens who are collectively responsible for organising events, services, discipline and pastoral care. We are all full time staff or postgraduate students at the College who choose to live in Hall in order to help you get the most of your time here.

The residences are located in a superb part of London with all kinds of amenities very close by. The Halls are modern conversions of traditional grand London houses, with a number of common spaces for cooking, organised events, and relaxing. We also have access to a large, shared garden at the rear. We hope that you will find HWJ a very comfortable, convenient, and enjoyable place to live!

The Wardens can be collectively contacted by email at;
hwjwarden (at) imperial.ac.uk, or individually in person – you can find their details via the College’s Address Book.

Phil is a native of Northern Ireland but don’t let the strong Irish accent scare you off – he’s really quite friendly. He has long since swapped the peaceful green fields of the Emerald Isle for the busy streets of London having moved to Imperial College almost ten years ago. He is a lecturer in PET radiochemistry (no, this nothing to with domestic animals!) and spends most of his time in the Department of Chemistry with the occasional day at Hammersmith Hospital making radioactive stuff for imaging brains. In his spare time he likes to run, swim and cycle, although not all at the same time. He lives with his ‘better-half’, Cara, a doctor at Chelsea & Westminster and their little daughter Sophia who keeps them on their toes.

Phil is based in Willis Jackson House.

Matina comes from the magnificent island of Lesvos in Greece. She did her PhD in the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and currently she is a Research Associate at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. She loves theatre and enjoys exploring new countries. In her spare time she enjoys going out to nice restaurants and bars. Do not hesitate to knock her door if you want to talk about anything! Looking forward to helping make your year at Holbein & Willis Jackson Hall one of the best of your life so far. Have fun!!!

Matina is based in Holbein House.

Zsófia is doing a PhD in chemistry, and is new-(ish) to Imperial, having done her MSci at Bristol with a year in sunny France. Zsófia likes baking and cooking, with some interesting Hungarian dishes on offer if anyone wants to try or to learn, and is prepared to take orders for cake! She also enjoys sports such as running, swimming and waterpolo. Please feel free to come for a chat/food/coffee at any time.

Zsófia is based in Willis Jackson House.

Andrew, our resident Scot, has been at Imperial for four years. Unlike the rest of the team, Andrew isn’t a student or an academic – he’s a permanent staff member at Imperial College Union, where he looks after your student representatives, and also helps students run campaigns or lobby College. It’s about as close to student life as you can get, without any of the coursework or exams. In his free time you can find him reading, watching films, or going out to meet friends (and more importantly, to eat without having to cook).

Andrew is based in Holbein House.

Maria is originally from Blackpool in the north-west of England, but loved London so much she has been here for ten years. Having completed her PhD in the Mechanical Engineering Department, she is now a Postdoc in the Biomechanics group, helping to develop new replacement joints. Maria is a keen (although not necessarily talented) hockey player, having played a season or two at uni. She also volunteers with Girlguiding, which gives her the chance to work with some great young people, as well as get outdoors and go camping. Maria drinks tea like a fish, so will be always be happy for you to stop by for a chat over a nice hot cuppa!
